What is an intruder alarm system?
An intruder alarm system detects unauthorised entry using door contacts, motion detectors and other sensors, triggering a local alert and, where connected to an Alarm Receiving Centre, a remote signal. The design and equipment required depend on the level of risk the premises presents, formally assessed and graded under BS EN 50131-1.
Is it a legal requirement?
Installing an intruder alarm is not a legal requirement, but insurers frequently specify one, and the grade required, as a condition of cover. PD 6662 requires a documented risk assessment to determine the correct grade before installation begins, giving both you and your insurer confidence the system matches the actual risk.
Understanding alarm grades
BS EN 50131-1 defines four security grades, reflecting the sophistication of intruder the system is designed to resist.
Low risk
An opportunistic intruder with limited knowledge of alarm systems
Low to medium risk
Some knowledge of alarm systems and basic tools
Medium to high risk
Familiar with alarm systems, using a comprehensive range of tools
High risk
The security of the premises is a high priority, defended against sophisticated intruders
How Smartec does this
Smartec Integrated Systems is NSI Gold accredited across all our security services. Our engineers carry out a full risk assessment before recommending a grade, then design and install to BS EN 50131-1 and PD 6662. Systems are maintained under BS 9263 at least annually, or every 6 months where the system is linked to an ARC for police response. Every visit is logged in your Digital Logbook on the Smartec Client Portal.

FAQs
- What is PD 6662?
- The UK scheme document that packages together the European and British Standards, including BS EN 50131-1, governing intruder alarm design and installation.
- What are the alarm grades?
- Four grades from 1 (low risk, opportunistic intruder) to 4 (high risk, sophisticated intruder), determined by a documented risk assessment.
- Is a risk assessment required before installation?
- Yes, PD 6662 requires a documented risk assessment to establish the correct grade before a system is designed.
- How often is an intruder alarm maintained?
- At least annually. Systems linked to an ARC for police response are maintained every 6 months.
- Does this include monitoring and police response?
- Installation and monitoring are separate services. See our Alarm Monitoring page for URN registration and police response setup.
- Will my insurer specify a particular grade?
- Often, yes. Insurers frequently require a specific grade as a condition of cover, based on the value and risk profile of the premises.
